FBA Costs & Fees

How much does FBA prep cost?

FBA prep typically runs $0.35 to $1.75 per unit in 2026. Basic prep (FNSKU labeling only) costs $0.15-$0.40 per unit. Polybag + suffocation label adds $0.20-$0.55. Bundling or kitting two+ items runs $0.50-$1.25. Carton relabel is usually $2-$4 per box. Since Amazon ended its US prep service in 2026, these costs now fall on a third-party prep center or your freight forwarder’s bonded warehouse. Budget $0.40/unit blended average for standard FBA prep. See our full pricing breakdown or the WWS Cargo FBA prep service page for what’s included in our bonded-warehouse prep workflow.

How much is the FBA labeling fee?

Amazon’s own labeling fee (where still offered) is $0.55 per unit. But since Amazon ended US labeling for most accounts in 2026, the effective cost is what a prep center or forwarder charges: $0.15-$0.40 per FNSKU label. The real gotcha is timing — you can’t ship unlabeled cartons to an Amazon FC and expect them to be received. For China shipments, labeling happens at a bonded warehouse after customs and before drayage. See FBA labeling fee details.

What are the new FBA fees 2026?

Amazon rolled out several FBA fee changes in 2026: a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on all fulfillment fees effective April 17, 2026; inbound placement fees restructured; long-tenure storage surcharges pulled forward in the fee schedule; low-inventory-level fee expanded to more categories; Amazon’s US prep service ended January 1, 2026. Per Amazon, base FBA fees rose by an average of $0.08 per unit sold (less than 0.5% of average item selling price); all-in impact is larger once surcharges, placement fees, and prep costs are included. Winning strategy in 2026: smaller, faster shipments beat quarterly bulk. See full 2026 fee breakdown and the broader Amazon FBA 2026 changes guide (covering all six policy shifts, not just fees).

Do I need barcode labels to sell on Amazon?

Yes — every FBA unit needs a scannable barcode. Options: manufacturer barcodes (UPC/EAN/ISBN) or Amazon FNSKU labels (assigned when you create a shipment). Most professional sellers in 2026 use FNSKU — keeps inventory separate from comingled pools, tracks cleanly, required for most categories. FNSKU must be 1in × 2in minimum, non-reflective white paper, scannable.

Does Amazon provide packaging for sellers?

No. All packaging (cartons, polybags, dunnage, labels) is the seller’s responsibility. Amazon sets strict requirements: polybags 1.5 mil+, suffocation warnings if >5in, fully sealed. For cartons, standard corrugated is fine if properly labeled with FBA shipment IDs. Most sellers buy packaging from their factory or US-based suppliers like Uline. Amazon’s Frustration-Free Packaging program provides guidelines but you still buy the materials.

DDP Shipping

Is DDP shipping worth it?

For small importers or first-time FBA sellers — yes. For established sellers moving 4+ containers a year — often no. DDP trades customs complexity for a higher price. The convenience premium runs 8-15% above handling customs yourself. Sensible when you don’t have a continuous bond, established broker, or operational bandwidth. Stops making sense at higher volumes or when HS codes are ambiguous enough to challenge. See our full DDP shipping guide for the volume breakeven math, or DDP shipping for Amazon FBA for the Amazon-specific legality framework.

Is DDP shipping illegal?

No. DDP is a standard Incoterm recognized by the ICC and used in millions of legitimate transactions annually. Confusion comes from (1) sellers using DDP to facilitate customs fraud — that’s the seller’s fault, not DDP’s, and (2) some jurisdictions (UK post-Brexit) require local VAT registration; non-registered sellers shipping DDP are non-compliant. In the US, DDP works cleanly and legally.

What are the disadvantages of DDP shipping?

Five main disadvantages: (1) hidden markup on duties (8-25%); (2) no broker control — seller picks, you inherit errors; (3) weaker insurance defaults (110% minimum); (4) VAT/tax liability can rebound to buyer in EU/UK; (5) no accountability for reverse logistics after delivery. DDP is easy to buy but hard to audit.

Is DDP shipping legit?

Yes — when executed properly. DDP is legitimate, long-standing, and used by major importers. What varies is execution quality. A reputable forwarder files accurate CBP entries, pays correct duty, handles insurance, documents everything. A shady one undervalues shipments or misclassifies HS codes. Evaluate DDP quotes by asking for the customs broker’s name, CHB license number, and FMC license.

Amazon & Freight

Does Amazon use sea freight?

Yes, extensively. Amazon Global Logistics (AGL) moves millions of containers annually between Asia and North America for Amazon’s own inventory and some 3P sellers. Amazon Freight handles US domestic trucking. For most 3P FBA sellers, independent forwarders are faster and more flexible than AGL, with better lane coverage and direct-to-FC delivery with prep compliance handled end-to-end. See our 2026 ocean freight issues guide for the current market context (Red Sea routing, Hormuz crisis, 1-2% demand growth, and what it means for FBA shippers).

Is FBA a 3PL?

Partially — but not the way most sellers need. FBA handles classic 3PL tasks (warehousing, pick/pack, shipping to Amazon customers). But FBA only fulfills Amazon orders, doesn’t handle inbound logistics, doesn’t do prep (as of 2026), and is restricted to Amazon’s FC locations. Most serious sellers run hybrid: FBA + traditional 3PL for Amazon FBA in the USA for other channels + freight forwarder for inbound. See is FBA a 3PL.

Is Amazon freight owned by Amazon?

Yes. Amazon Freight is a subsidiary of Amazon, competing with J.B. Hunt, Schneider, XPO. Launched 2020, expanded through mid-2020s. Amazon owns or leases tractors, employs or contracts drivers, uses its own Amazon Relay app for operations. Amazon also runs AGL for ocean and Amazon Air for cargo flights — all vertically integrated. 3P sellers can book Amazon Freight, but independents usually offer more competitive rates on standard lanes.

Does Amazon still do commingling?

Yes, but tightened in 2026. Commingling pools inventory from multiple sellers by manufacturer barcode. In 2026, Amazon expanded restrictions: regulated categories (food, supplements, cosmetics, baby), and now electronics and counterfeit-risk products have commingling blocked. Most professional sellers avoid commingling anyway by using FNSKU labels. Commingling only helps on very low-margin commodity products.

Customs & Clearance

How long does it take for an Amazon package to clear customs?

Typical 2026 times: ocean freight 2-5 business days, air freight 1-2 days, express courier hours/overnight. Add 5-14 days if CBP pulls for physical exam (exam rates on Amazon-bound shipments have been elevated through 2025–2026 but vary by HS code and season). Add 3-10 days for paperwork issues. Budget a full week from vessel arrival to release. See customs clearance timing.

Do I need to pay customs on Amazon?

For FBA sellers importing inventory: yes — duty, Merchandise Processing Fee (0.3464%), Harbor Maintenance Fee (0.125%), plus anti-dumping duties if applicable. Rates vary 0-25%+ depending on HS code and country. For Amazon consumers on US domestic orders: no. For international Amazon orders, Amazon collects Import Fees Deposit at checkout. Budget 4-25% of landed cost for duty.

Does import customs clearance completed mean it’s in my country?

Yes — customs clearance completed means goods have legally entered the destination country, cleared government review, and had duties paid. No longer held by customs authority. Next steps: drayage to warehouse, prep, then delivery to FC. A “cleared” status not moving for 5+ days usually means drayage scheduling or prep backlog — not customs.

How do I add ID for Amazon customs clearance?

In Seller Central → Settings → Global Selling → Importer Number. Enter your taxpayer ID (EIN for US businesses, SSN for US individuals, ITIN for non-US persons with US tax obligation) and CBP assigned number if applicable. Address must exactly match IRS records. Validation takes 24-72 hours. See step-by-step guide.

Do you still get your package if you don’t pay customs?

No. If customs duty isn’t paid, the shipment is held at the port or airport. After a grace period (varies by CBP), CBP may: return the shipment to sender, abandon and destroy it, or auction it after 6 months. For consumer packages with unpaid Import Fees Deposit, Amazon either charges your payment method or returns the package. For commercial freight, your customs broker handles duty payment — if there’s a dispute, it gets resolved there.

How to add ID proof in Amazon?

For seller verification (not customs), Amazon requires government-issued photo ID + a recent business document (utility bill, bank statement, articles of incorporation). Upload via Seller Central → Account Info → Business Information. Verification typically takes 1-3 business days. If rejected, check that: name matches exactly across documents, images are clear and uncropped, documents are under 180 days old.

Does Amazon Logistics have a Customer Service number?

No direct seller-facing phone line for Amazon Logistics (AMZL). Support is via Seller Central messaging or your dedicated account manager if you have one. For consumer-side AMZL delivery issues, customers use the standard Amazon customer service channels (1-888-280-4331) which may route to AMZL team. Sellers experiencing AMZL-specific issues should open a case through Seller Central — email responses typically within 24-48 hours.

Freight Operations

Are drayage and trucking the same?

No. Drayage is short-distance specialized trucking (under 100 miles) moving containers from ports, rail yards, or terminals to nearby warehouses. Regular trucking (OTR) handles longer distances. Different equipment, pricing (per-move vs per-mile), credentials (TWIC required for drayage), and regulations. Both usually needed for China → FBA. See drayage vs trucking.

What are the 4 types of logistics?

The four commonly recognized types are: (1) inbound (suppliers → your facility), (2) outbound (your facility → customer), (3) reverse (returns, repairs, recycling), (4) 3PL (outsourced logistics provider). Some frameworks add 4PL (manages multiple 3PLs as single point of contact). For FBA sellers: freight forwarder = inbound, FBA = outbound, Amazon Returns = reverse (partial), everything else handled by sub-vendors.

What are the 7 types of freight trucks?

The seven common US truck types: (1) dry van — enclosed, packaged goods; (2) reefer — refrigerated; (3) flatbed — open deck for oversized; (4) step deck — flatbed with lower second deck; (5) straight truck/box truck — single unit local delivery; (6) power-only — tractor only for container chassis/customer trailers; (7) specialized — heavy haul, hazmat, tanker. FBA freight uses dry van 95% of the time.

What are the four types of freight?

The four primary freight classifications: (1) FTL (full truckload — one shipment fills a trailer); (2) LTL (less-than-truckload — multiple small shipments share a trailer); (3) intermodal (ocean/rail + truck combined); (4) specialized (heavy haul, hazmat, reefer, oversized). Amazon FBA inventory is typically FTL or LTL; imported inventory starts as intermodal.

Amazon Relay & 3PL

Can you drive a cargo van for Amazon Relay?

Yes — Amazon Relay accepts cargo vans for specific loads, typically middle-mile or regional deliveries. Eligibility requires CDL (for larger vans/box trucks), valid insurance, and Amazon Relay carrier registration. Cargo van work on Relay is less common than semi-truck work but available on the platform. Earnings per load are lower than TL work but runs are shorter.

How much does Amazon Relay pay for cargo vans?

Cargo van rates on Amazon Relay vary by lane and region, typically $1.20-$1.85 per mile for box truck runs and $0.95-$1.40 per mile for sprinter-class cargo vans. Rates fluctuate with market conditions and fuel surcharges. Dedicated routes pay less than spot-market loads. Full-time cargo van operators report monthly gross revenue of $8K-$14K, before fuel, insurance, and maintenance.

Is Amazon Relay only for semi-trucks?

No. Amazon Relay supports semi-trucks (the majority), box trucks, cargo vans, sprinter vans, and specialized equipment where Amazon needs capacity. The platform was designed around Class 8 semi operations, and semi loads still make up ~80% of Relay volume, but smaller vehicle classes have grown as Amazon expanded middle-mile and regional networks.

How much money can you make hauling for Amazon?

Full-time Amazon Relay drivers report annual revenue of $180K-$280K per truck for semi operations, $90K-$150K for box truck/cargo van work — before expenses. Net income after fuel, insurance, maintenance, truck payment, and taxes typically lands at 18-28% of revenue for owner-operators. Dedicated routes pay less but offer predictability; spot loads pay more but have downtime between loads.

How much do Amazon couriers get paid?

Amazon Flex drivers (delivering packages in their own vehicles) earn $18-$25/hour in most markets, base rate. Amazon-employed delivery drivers (DAs) earn $20-$27/hour in the US depending on region. Amazon Logistics delivery partners (DSPs) employ drivers at similar wages plus benefits. Flex drivers are 1099 contractors responsible for their own expenses; DAs and DSP employees get benefits.

Selling on Amazon

Can I make $1000 a month selling on Amazon?

Yes, with modest investment and the right product. $1,000/month net profit on Amazon typically requires $4,000-$8,000 in initial inventory investment plus $50-$100/month in Amazon seller fees and ads. About 35-50% of active sellers reach this milestone in their first year. The more common path: start at $200-$500/month in year one, scale to $1,000+ by year two. Product selection matters more than capital; a low-margin $20 item will never hit $1K profit as easily as a $40-$60 item with 25-35% margins.

Can I make 10K a month selling on Amazon?

Possible but uncommon — roughly 12-18% of active sellers hit this. $10K/month net typically requires $30K-$60K in working capital, consistent inventory availability, and either a single hero SKU with strong margin or a portfolio of 5-10 products generating moderate revenue each. Private label with product differentiation scales faster than wholesale/arbitrage. Timeline to $10K/month: 12-24 months for most sellers who reach it.

Can I start selling on Amazon with $500?

Yes, but with significant constraints. $500 gets you: Amazon professional seller account ($40/month), minimal inventory test run (usually 20-50 units of a low-cost product), and basic product photography. At this capital level, you’re limited to arbitrage, dropshipping, or very low-ASP products. Scaling from $500 to sustainable income requires reinvesting profits — expect 6-12 months before you can add a second product.

How many Amazon sellers make over $100k?

Approximately 25-35% of Amazon third-party sellers generate over $100K/year in gross revenue, according to industry surveys. Net profit is a different story: roughly 10-15% of sellers net over $100K personally after all costs. Sellers achieving >$1M annual revenue represent about 5-8% of active sellers.

Does Amazon ban for multiple accounts?

Yes — having multiple active seller accounts without Amazon’s approval violates Seller Policy and can result in account suspension. Amazon links accounts via credit card, bank info, device fingerprints, IP addresses, business addresses, and tax IDs. To legitimately run multiple accounts, you need a valid business reason (different brands, separate LLCs, international regions) and can request permission through Seller Central. Unauthorized second accounts almost always get detected eventually.

How much money can you make selling wholesale in Amazon in 2026?

Amazon wholesale sellers typically net 10-18% margin on gross revenue. Top quartile wholesale sellers in 2026 generate $250K-$1M/year in gross revenue with $25K-$180K net profit. Lower margins than private label (30%+) but lower risk and faster inventory turnover. Wholesale requires relationships with authorized distributors, which take time to establish. 2026 Amazon policy changes (ended prep service, fee increases) have compressed wholesale margins by roughly 2-4 points vs 2024.

International / China

Is Amazon cancelling inventory orders from China?

No — Amazon isn’t cancelling inventory orders from China, though 2026 tariff and trade policy changes have raised landed costs significantly. Some sellers report longer inspection rates at CBP for China-origin goods. Amazon’s 2026 policy changes (prep service shutdown, commingling restrictions) affect all inventory equally regardless of origin. Chinese-origin inventory is still the majority of FBA volume.

Is there a Chinese freight forwarder?

Yes — thousands of them. Chinese freight forwarders range from small local operators in Shenzhen/Shanghai to large multinationals. For Amazon FBA inventory shipping from China, forwarders based in China or US-based forwarders with strong China presence are both common. Key things to verify: FMC licensing (if US-based), export licenses on the China side, customs bond coverage, and experience with Amazon FC delivery requirements under the 2026 policy.

Is DDP shipping worth it for Amazon FBA?

For first-time FBA sellers buying from China: often yes. DDP bundles freight + customs + drayage into a single quote, avoiding the need to set up customs bond and broker relationships. For sellers shipping 4+ containers/year: usually no — the convenience premium exceeds the cost of building customs capability. Always verify DDP contract explicitly covers Amazon FC appointment, reroute fees, and prep compliance. See our DDP shipping guide and China to Amazon FBA guide for the full flow.

AliExpress stuck at import customs clearance started?

“Import customs clearance started” on AliExpress usually means CBP has received the shipment information but processing isn’t complete. For consumer orders, this status typically lasts 1-5 business days. If stuck for 10+ days, possible causes: paperwork issue, random exam hold, or package was abandoned. Contact AliExpress seller for the tracking detail from their carrier, or file a dispute if status hasn’t updated in 14+ days.

Logistics Basics

What are the 4 P’s of logistics?

The 4 P’s of logistics are: Product (what you’re moving), Price (cost of moving it), Place (origin to destination), Promotion (value proposition of your logistics service). This is a marketing-adapted framework. The more common operational framework is the 7 R’s (right product, right quantity, right condition, right place, right time, right customer, right price) — used by most logistics managers for service delivery evaluation.

What are the biggest challenges in freight transport today?

Top challenges in 2026 freight: (1) driver shortage (~60K short in US); (2) port congestion (cyclical, LA/LB especially); (3) tightening regulatory compliance (emissions, clean truck mandates, ELD); (4) visibility/data fragmentation across ocean→drayage→OTR→FC. Amazon FBA-specific fifth challenge: the 2026 end of Amazon’s prep service added complexity most sellers are still absorbing.

What are the three types of compliance?

In logistics/freight, the three compliance categories are: (1) regulatory (CBP, FMCSA, FDA, FCC — government rules you must follow); (2) contractual (shipper-carrier agreements, insurance, bond requirements, Amazon’s routing rules); (3) operational (packaging, labeling, weight limits, documentation accuracy). Amazon FBA adds a fourth layer: platform compliance — polybag rules, FNSKU formats, shipment plan adherence.
